"Do you have everything packed, Oliver?"
Ollie, formally Oliver Black, but only his mother called him that, rolled his eyes at his mother.
"Yes, Momma. Isabel helped me pack last night, and Leah checked it this morning."
It was true- the younger two Black girls were headed back to Sigma Academy after the break, and they had deigned to assist their only brother prepare for school. He had a whole trunk packed with things he surely didn't need, not that he would tell his mother that. They had gone shopping for new clothes over the holiday weeks, but the only thing Ollie needed were his play clothes and a pair of pajamas. And maybe a change of underwear.
"Yeah, Mom, he's fine. Geez, don't worry so much!"
Leah Black was all of sixteen, and full of attitude. She had left most of her things in her dorm from last semester, and so was only taking a small, designer backpack to school this year. Inside was probably her two Pokeballs, since Ollie couldn't see either them or her Pokemon, and other girlie things. He didn't really know- it had never been an issue for him. All he needed was a nice patch of dirt and a Pokemon or two to play with, and he was set for hours.
Mrs. Black shot a glare at her middle child for her tone, but she had already shifted her attention. Now she dug through the refrigerator looking for something to eat. For a girl who ate as much as Leah, it was remarkable that she wasn't grossly overweight. Now, that wasn't to say that she didn't have a bit of a tummy- after all, we cannot all be tall, slender, and willowy model-like blondes- but something she was doing at school seems to be working.
"Don't use that tone with me, young lady. Where's your sister?"
Ollie generally tried to make himself scarce when his mother and sister went at it like this. According to him, the world was just right, and fighting always ruined his mood, not to mention appetite. So, when it looked like it was going to escalate into a fight, he left the room.
In this case, the room was the kitchen, so he went into the living room. His older sister Rebecca was in there, flipping through channels. She was sprawled over one of the big armchairs, still in her pajamas. It was hard to believe that Rebecca had graduated Sigma Academy with honors, especially when she was lougning about the house like this, but she had. When she noticed that he was in the room, she jerked her head towards another chair, and proceeded to ignore him.
Ollie didn't mind- he was used to being ignored by his sisters. He also had to stay clean until he got to school, but that didn't mean that he had to stay bored until then. His starter, Vicky the Bellsprout, had been packed away in her very own, shiny red-and-white Pokeball. She would have to stay in there during the car ride to the Academy, but for now, surely, they could play.
In a way, the car ride was far too short. In just a few minutes, Ollie would be starting his journey towards greatness, and it didn't feel like it. In another way, that same car ride was far too long. Leah and Isabel never got along even on a good day, and today was not one of their good days. Leah spent the entire ride nattering, and Isabel spent it sulking. Good thing Momma's van had three rows of seats.
"What do I do when I get there?" Ollie asked his mother. Momma looked over at her youngest, and only son, and smiled maternally.
"Your sisters will walk you through, won't you girls?"
That last bit was pointedly thrown at the at-odds sisters, who fell silent for a moment.
"Sure, whatever," was Leah's response.
"Duh," was Isabel's.
So when the silver and green van pulled up to the Academy's front door, the two older sisters each took their little brother by one hand, and guided him inside. They registered quickly with the receptionist, and introduced their brother.
"This is Oliver, our little brother. He's just starting this year."
Ollie smiled, and held onto Vicky's Pokeball a little tighter.
